March for peace at UN Headquarters marks UN Charter Day
To mark United Nations Charter Day, delegates from Member States and UN staff today held a silent march for peace at the world body's Headquarters in New York.
On the fifty-sixth anniversary of the signing of the document, a number of Permanent Representatives to the United Nations led the national groups in a march around the North Garden to relay the Preamble of the Charter, which opens with the words "We the Peoples of the United Nations."
The UN Charter -- the Organization's founding document -- was originally signed by 50 countries on 26 June 1945 in San Francisco.
