10 May 2001

Representatives of a Sierra Leonean rebel army have appealed to the Force Commander of the United Nations mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) to deploy peacekeepers near the border with Guinea, UNAMSIL said today.

The appeal came during a meeting in Kambia on Wednesday between Force Commander Lieutenant-General Daniel Opande and leaders of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), who urged the UN official to send peacekeepers to the district "without further delay."

The Force Commander was accompanied by UNAMSIL deputy chief Behrooz Sadry, who stressed that the peace process should now move forward with the support of all sides.

During a visit to the neighbouring town of Kukuna, Mr. Sadry told a gathering of local people that they "deserved not only peace, but also prosperity.
