UN Assembly approves extension of Mary Robinson's appointment as rights chief

The United Nations General Assembly today approved the extension of Mary Robinson's appointment as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The Assembly acted on the recommendation of Secretary-General Kofi Annan who proposed to extend her appointment for one year, until 11 September 2002.

Ms. Robinson, former President of Ireland, is the second person to serve in the position of High Commissioner. José Ayala-Lasso of Ecuador was the first official to occupy the post, which was established by the General Assembly in 1993.
