Police cadets in Timor
The United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) today announced that 77 more police cadets have graduated from the Timor Lorosa'e police academy in Dili -- bringing the total number of officers performing in the territory to 706.

UNTAET said the new officers -- who attended classes on human rights, community policing, firearms and self-defence -- had previously served in the Indonesian police and had all been vetted in consultation with the East Timorese community.

In another development, UNTAET announced that a UN peacekeeper from Australia was wounded yesterday in the right forearm following a machete attack by a group of civilians close to Hera, near Dili. The peacekeeper was evacuated to the UN hospital in Dili where he is in a stable condition. UNTAET says that the incident has been referred to the UN Civilian Police (CIVPOL) for investigation.
