Accord reached for release of hijacked UN food aid ship in Somalia

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today announced an agreement with local leaders and Somalia’s Transitional Federal Government (TFG) for the release of an agency-chartered ship, its 10-member crew and its cargo after it was hijacked off the coast six weeks ago while bringing aid to tsunami victims.

UN renews call for total nuclear ban on 60th anniversary of bombing of Japan

The United Nations is marking the sombre 60th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki with renewed calls for a nuclear-weapons-free world, and for all States to prevent the spread of such weapons by reaffirming their commitment to international nuclear non-proliferation treaties and accords.
