The 193 members of the United Nations General Assembly today elected Sweden, Bolivia, Ethiopia and Kazakhstan to serve on the world body’s Security Council for a period of two years, starting from 1 January 2017.

At the United Nations General Assembly tomorrow morning – and for the first time in June, as part of revitalization efforts in the Assembly – elections will be held to fill five non-permanent seats on the Security Council.

UN agency announces world's first illegal fishing treaty now in force

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has announced that a groundbreaking international accord aimed at stamping out illegal fishing went into effect today and is now legally binding for the 29 countries and a regional organization that have adhered to it.
