Clean industrialization critical for Africa to ‘leapfrog’ outdated technologies – Ban

Africa needs a green, clean industrialization that leapfrogs outdated, polluting processes and platforms and benefits from new technologies, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said today as the world body marked Africa Industrialization Day.

Ebola cases no longer rising in Guinea, Liberia, UN health agency reports

The United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) reported today that the number of Ebola cases is “no longer increasing nationally in Guinea and Liberia, but is still increasing in Sierra Leone”, and that preparedness teams have been sent this week to Benin, Burkina Faso, Gambia and Senegal.

‘Insecurity on the march again’ in Africa’s Sahel region, UN relief official warns

Insecurity is on the march again in the countries of Africa’s Sahel belt, where extremists have displaced 1.5 million people in Nigeria and the threat of Ebola is exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis, the United Nations humanitarian regional coordinator said today.

Security Council calls for thorough investigation into alleged mass rape in North Darfur

Echoing calls from the wider United Nations community, the Security Council today expressed concern at allegations over the mass rape in late October of 200 women and girls in Tabit, North Darfur, calling on the Government of Sudan to conduct a thorough investigation.

Libya: UN mission brokers ‘critical’ 12-hour humanitarian truce in Benghazi

UN agency starts relocation of 15,000 South Sudanese refugees in Ethiopia

The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) has begun relocating nearly 15,000 South Sudanese refugees who had been stranded for a few months at a way station in western Ethiopia after the refugee camp where they were due to live was flooded.
Police turned away patients at the Clinique Pasteur in Bamako, Mali, after the hospital was put under quarantine for the Ebola virus.

Efforts by UN health agency under way to step up Ebola response in Mali

The United Nations is intensifying its efforts to keep the Ebola outbreak from spreading in Mali by working to identify all chains of transmission and stepping up social mobilization campaigns to include a range of actors, from religious leaders to truck and bus drivers.

DR Congo: UN warns of humanitarian ‘catastrophe’ as hundreds of thousands flee violence in Katanga

Deeply concerned about the “catastrophic" humanitarian situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Katanga province, the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) today urged Congolese authorities and the UN stabilization mission to boost their respective capacities to stem the violence in the long-troubled, resource-rich area known as “the triangle of death.”

Ebola: DR Congo declares end to outbreak, as top footballers join global fight against virus

The United Nations today praised the end of an outbreak of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), as some of the world’s top football players, including Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona’s Neymar Jr, announced they are joining the Organization’s fight to help raise global awareness in the fight against the deadly virus.
