‘Give peace a chance; give children a chance,’ senior UN peacekeeping official says visiting South Sudan

All stakeholders in South Sudan must “engage genuinely and constructively in finding a political solution” to the conflict there, a senior United Nations peacekeeping official said at the end of her four-day visit.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Friday urged the world to reflect on the suffering of those who perished, as well as survived, the Rwandan genocide, and resolve to prevent such atrocities from ever happening again.

UNICEF estimates that nearly 800,000 children have been displaced by inter-ethnic conflicts in the Provinces of Tanganyika and South Kivu, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Some, like this young girl and her sister, have made their way to some of the makeshift camps that have sprung up around the city of Kalemie.
