UN peacekeeping’s long history of support to DR Congo

MONUSCO peacekeepers are holding their positions in support of DR Congo's armed forces to repel M23 and protect civilians in the eastern part of the country.

Peacekeepers from MONUSCO, the UN peacekeeping operation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, are continuing to support of the country as it battles insecurity, conflict and a humanitarian crisis.

MONUSCO was established in 2010, taking over from earlier UN missions dating back to the 1960s.

MONUSCO’s Indian Rapid Deployment Battalion patrols around their base in Sake in North Kivu province.

Its mandate includes protecting civilians, enabling humanitarians to carry out their work and supporting the Government of the DRC in its stabilization and peace consolidation efforts.

The safety of local people, particularly women and children, is a key priority for MONUSCO.
