Through a project led by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the community participates in disaster simulations, including scenarios like floods and landslides. Children play a vital role in these exercises, practicing how to remain in visible areas, protect their heads, and shout for help if they’re trapped.
Training sessions are tailored to ensure that people with disabilities are also adequately equipped for the challenges posed by a disaster. Antonio Ornai, who is visually impaired, said he was grateful to be included. “I will use everything I’ve learned to protect myself in the future”, he added.
The Timor-Leste Red Cross (CVTL) is a partner organization of UNEP, working to prepare the population of six villages in the country to protect themselves from disasters. The volunteers form a network of individuals who combine a strong motivation to save lives, local knowledge of at-risk areas, and skills acquired through training.
