The Southeast Asian country, Timor-Leste is celebrating 25 years since a referendum which freed its people from occupation by Indonesia.

The United Nations provided support to ensure that the ballot took place and was free, fair and open to all registered voters.
 

Despite widespread intimidation and violence, the referendum took place successfully and two years later Timor-Leste celebrated its independence from Indonesia.

Timor-Leste continued to endure factional violence and the UN supported communities which were directly affected.

In 2007, parliamentary elections were held and the UN once again played its role in ensuring that ballot papers reached the remotest locations.

Meanwhile, UN police officers from Portugal and other countries provided support to the National Police force as part of law and order efforts across the country.

During periods of instability, in which some people were forced to flee their homes UN humanitarian agencies were able to offer safe places for communities to shelter.

Throughout the 2010s and up to the present day, the UN has worked with Timor-Leste to promote sustainable development.

The cultivation of coffee helped to realise the national priority of promoting rural development.

The UN Chief, António Guterres (left), celebrated the 25th anniversary of the referendum in Timor-Leste, saying that independence was made possible by the “collective affirmation of the people.”
