Ending conflict key to overcoming humanitarian crisis in South Sudan: UN relief chief
Introduction:
Ongoing conflict must be brought to an end in order to curtail the steadily growing number of people in need of humanitarian assistance in South Sudan, according to the UN Emergency Relief Coordinator.
The country has been in the grips of civil conflict for five years, and the resulting widespread displacement; loss of livelihoods; and dangerous conditions for aid workers has left 7.1 million South Sudanese — or more than half the country’s population — in need of international aid.
Mark Lowcock, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, spoke to Vibhu Mishra about South Sudan’s growing challenges.
