Africa migration: good for the continent and ‘good for the world’

Introduction:

Migration in Africa is good for the continent and “good for the world” as a catalyst for job and wealth creation, a UN expert economist said on Thursday.

Citing a new report showing that 19 million Africans were on the move within the continent and 17 million left to go abroad last year, Dr   Milasoa Cherel-Robson from the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) said that migration there has a growing development role to play.

Africa is also a destination for 5.5 million migrants from outside the continent, according to the UNCTAD Economic Development in Africa Report, on migration.

Dr Cherel-Robson has been speaking to Alpha Diallo in Geneva.
