'I wouldn’t be here without UN fund for torture victims'

Intro:

Journalist and rights campaigner Hasan Bility endured months of torture during Liberia’s civil war in the 1990s; today, with the help of a special UN fund, he’s making sure that his abusers answer for their crimes in court.

Sharing his story at an event in Geneva held by the UN Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture, Mr Bility also stressed that such assistance helps make survivors “feel human again”. It also empowers others to assert their rights, he said.

Worldwide, the UN fund provides support to 50,000 victims a year with legal, medical, psychological and social assistance.

Mr Bility spoke to Daniel Johnson.
