Newborn babies deserve greatest chance to survive: UNICEF

Newborn babies deserve greatest chance to survive: UNICEF

Intro:

One million newborns die the day they are born and a staggering 2.6 million do not survive their first month of life.

That’s according to the latest global report by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) launched on Tuesday.

The UNICEF study is titled Every Child ALIVE. It finds high newborn death rates are linked to conflicts, insecurities and large equity gaps, with babies born in poor, war-torn places 50 times more likely to die in their first month of life compared with those born in stable, wealthier nations.

Willibald Zeck is Head of the Global Maternal, Newborn and Adolescent Health Programme at UNICEF, explained to Liz Scaffidi why Japan tops the list of countries with the lowest newborn mortality rates.
