Microsoft President: world needs 'Digital Geneva Convention'

Cybercrime is becoming such a huge threat to society that nothing less than a “Digital Geneva Convention” for the world is needed, the President of tech giant Microsoft said at the UN on Thursday.

Brad Smith, who was at the organisation’s European headquarters in Switzerland, spoke of “a new arms race” online, where states and businesses faced attack by “invisible weapons”.

He told Sandra Miller how the so-called “WannaCry” ransomware attack in May had damaged more than 200,000 computers in 150 countries and how the problem costs business US $ 70 billion a year.
