Changing realities on the ground in Sudan’s Darfur region have led the joint United Nations-African Union mission there, UNAMID, to refine and adapt its Protection of Civilians strategy.

The new approach involves focusing more on coordination as well as greater clarity on roles and responsibilities, according to Zurab Elzarov, who’s in charge of civilian protection, or PoC, for the mission.

Darfur came to global attention in 2003 after fighting erupted between government forces and their allied militia, and other rebel groups, which have now splintered.

UNAMID was mandated by the Security Council this year to reconfigure its mission, reducing troop levels on the ground, which is another factor in the evolving strategy.

Setyo Budi asked Mr Elzarov how changes in the military situation across Darfur had affected the new PoC approach.
