Dominica is “getting a grip” on recovery following a devastating hurricane which destroyed homes and turned swathes of the emerald-green Caribbean island, muddy brown.

That’s the verdict of Luca Renda, leader of the UN’s crisis management team in Dominica and a senior officer with the UN Development Programme (UNDP) in the region.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres was on the island on Sunday, which was badly damaged by category-5 Hurricane Maria in mid-September.

The UN chief paid tribute to Dominicans’ vision of rebuilding as the world’s first climate-resilient nation.

The UN and partners recently launched a US$31.1 million appeal to provide support for around 65,000 Dominicans over the coming months.

Elizabeth Philip spoke to Mr Renda on the ground there, and asked him to describe what he’d seen.
