Global education facing “learning crisis” warns World Bank

Millions of students in low- and middle-income countries face a “learning crisis” that is widening inequality, destroying opportunity and strangling economic growth.

That’s the stark conclusion of the World Development Report 2018, published on Tuesday by the World Bank, which is calling for greater action through “concrete policy steps” worldwide.

World Bank President Jim Yong Kim said the learning crisis was also “a moral and economic crisis” and schooling without real learning was a “great injustice” to children everywhere.

Matthew Wells spoke by phone to the lead authors of the report, Deon Filmer and Halsey Rogers, and began by asking them to outline their main findings.
