1.25 million road deaths must be stopped: UN Envoy

Every year, well over 1.2 million people are killed in traffic accidents, but efforts are under way to bring down that number dramatically, a top motorsports executive and senior UN official has said.

Jean Todt, who’s the UN Special Envoy for Road Safety, was speaking after the World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations pushed for more countries to implement guidelines on issues including stricter safety requirements and better road infrastructure.

The development – which is in line with Sustainable Development Goals 3.6 and 11.2 - could herald major changes in emerging economies, where more than nine in 10 fatalities happen, Mr Todt told Daniel Johnson.
