Efforts are under way to help thousands of victims of conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) where “nine out of ten villages” have been burned to the ground in some regions, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said on Friday.

Amid a recent decline in violence between armed militia and government forces, UNHCR announced that the situation has improved enough to warrant opening three reception centres.

An estimated 1.4 million people have been displaced as a result of violence that began in the central Kasais regions a year ago, and which has spread to nine regions out of 26.
