Democracy in Venezuela is “barely alive" and UN Member States should help prevent the situation from worsening, the UN’s rights chief said on Wednesday.

Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein made his comments in Geneva, where he said he would be asking the Human Rights Council to consider action, after his office released a report indicating state involvement in serious violations.

After highlighting threats to Press freedom in Venezuela, the High Commissioner added that freedom of expression was also being squeezed in the US, and this had “consequences”.
