A “vicious circle” of cholera being fuelled by malnutrition in war-torn Yemen, has seen the number of suspected cases of the deadly disease pass the half-a-million mark, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Monday.

Around 5,000 people are being infected every day, and nearly 2,000 have died since the outbreak began at the end of April.

What is now the world’s largest cholera outbreak was entirely preventable says the UN, but Yemen’s on-going conflict and collapsing health system has left millions vulnerable to the ravages of the water-borne disease.

WHO Spokesperson, Gregory Hartl, explained to Alpha Diallo that the disease had slowed significantly in some areas compared to peak levels, but was still spreading fast in newly-affected governorates.
