Breastfeeding protects both babies and their mothers from an array of diseases and helps boost their health long-term.

That’s according to Laurence Grummer-Strawn, a breastfeeding expert with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Department of Nutrition for Health and Development.

WHO and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) published the Global Breastfeeding Scorecard on Tuesday, in collaboration with the Global Breastfeeding Collective, at the start of World Breastfeeding Week.

It found that only 40 per cent of children younger than six months old are breastfed exclusively; a key WHO recommendation.

Ana Carmo asked Mr Grummer-Strawn what the consequences were for babies and their mothers, of not breastfeeding.
