A bid to protect global consumers from naturally occurring arsenic-contaminated rice has been given the go-ahead by Member States, the UN said on Monday.

The initiative is one of many food safety measures covered by an international body known as the Codex Alimentarius Commission.

It was set up in 1963 by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO); it’s meeting in Geneva now.

WHO’s Dr Kazuaki Miyagishima explained to Daniel Johnson that after its adoption by more than 185 Member States, the new Code of Practice gives farmers the tools they need to produce safer rice crops.
