Following the final defeat of Daesh, or ISIL, extremists, the residents of Mosul need to have confidence that essential services can and will return to their shattered city.

That’s the view of the UN’s Humanitarian Coordinator for Iraq, Lise Grande, who is also the UN Development Programme’s (UNDP) Resident Representative there.

She was the senior UN official on the ground overseeing the provision of aid and support for an estimated 920,000 displaced by the brutal battle to retake the city, which began in October last year.

She said that more than 2,000 vulnerable civilians remain trapped in the final pockets of the Old City where terrorist fighters are holding out.
