The UN’s Human Rights chief has defended the naming of Member States accused of grave violations, in an address at the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Speaking on the opening day of the Council’s 35th session, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein also criticised harassment of three of the body’s rights experts, who have faced “smear and hate campaigns” because of their work.

Meanwhile, in her first address to the Council, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley called for reforms, saying the body should be "more effective, more accountable and more responsive".
