Smoking “threatens us all” and, increasingly, the planet’s poorest communities, UN health experts said on Tuesday ahead of World No Tobacco Day 2017 on 31 May.

In an appeal to more Member States to put in place firmer tobacco controls, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that such action could reduce massive environmental damage, too.

Up to 40 per cent of coastal and urban litter comes from cigarette butts, the head of WHO’s Tobacco Free Initiative (TFI), Dr Vinayak Prasad, told Daniel Johnson.
