The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is warning of a highly contagious disease that is spreading among farmed and wild tilapia.

The Tilapia Lake Virus has now been confirmed in Colombia, Ecuador, Egypt, Israel and Thailand, and FAO is urging countries to intensify diagnostic testing, among other measures.

So far, it can only be found in three species of tilapia.

Dr. Melba Reantaso is a Fishery Resources Officer with FAO.

Mustafa al Gamal asked her if there’s any risk of the virus spreading to humans, or to other fish species.
