At least one billion children in the world suffer some form of violence every year, the UN Special Representative on Violence against Children has said.

Marta Santos Pais was speaking at the launch of a new publication on protecting children against torture in detention hosted by the UN in New York.

Violence, stigmatisation and sexual and psychological abuse are just a few of the violations children deprived of their liberty face on a daily basis.

More than 30 international children’s rights experts pooled their knowledge in an effort to strengthen the protection of these children.

They also underscored the obligations of States and analysed practices within the justice and criminal justice systems.

Ms Santos Pais explained the focus of the new study to Elizabeth Scaffidi.
