The emergence of a new nationalism in some Western countries, can be linked to the general feeling that they’re losing “influence and hegemony” in the world, according to the CEO of a think tank called Global Compass.

Jean Christophe Bas made the remarks after moderating a panel discussion on the global rise of populism and polarization.

The event was held this month on the margins of a forum on intercultural dialogue co-organized by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO together with the Government of Azerbaijan.

Populists are also using people’s fear of globalization and belief that it only “works for others,” for their own ends, Mr Bas told Elena Vapnitchnaia.
