An upcoming UN conference on oceans should see countries committing to fight illegal and unregulated fishing, according to a top official with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Maria Helena Semedo, the agency’s Assistant Director-General, said it is important to remember that millions of people depend on the oceans for their livelihood, which means marine resources should be sustainably managed.

Ms Semedo was in New York this week for a series of meetings and to mark the first observation of World Tuna Day on Tuesday.

She spoke to Jérôme Longué about some of the challenges FAO is working to address, including the threat posed by the overuse of antimicrobial drugs to treat and prevent diseases in animals.
