The descent into famine represents “a collective failure” from which many child survivors will never recover.

That’s the stark assessment of Arif Husain, Chief Economist and Food Security Analysis Director at the World Food Programme (WFP).

With pockets of famine already evident in South Sudan; and north-east Nigeria, Yemen and parts of Somalia teetering on the brink; there are 108 million people in 48 countries facing “significant food insecurity”, he said.

Mr Husain told Jon Sweeney it was one of the biggest crises of hunger the world has faced since 1945, and 20 million could slide into famine soon, if the world fails to respond now.
