More than 15 million African men, women and children were brought to the New World due to the transatlantic slave trade, which the UN has described as one of the darkest chapters in human history.

The International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, commemorated annually on 25 March, serves as an opportunity to honour their memory.

Roughly 200 million of their descendants are living in the Americas.
