It’s important for Ukrainian women to be an empowered voice in politics and represent vulnerable groups such as those displaced by conflict in the east.

That’s according to Hanna Hopko, a leading member of the Ukrainian parliament who was at UN Headquarters last week to attend meetings of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

On Wednesday, the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) delivered a report to the Human Rights Council in Geneva, outlining that civilians “continue to suffer” on both sides of the frontline between self-declared separatists and Ukrainian government forces.

The report said that within the Ukrainian territory of Crimea, under “temporary occupation” by Russia, “there were serious concerns about human rights violations.”

Matthew Wells asked Ms Hopko what key concerns had been discussed during the IPU session.
