Governments need to “act soon” to meet the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement and keep global temperature rises to below two degrees Celsius, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

New figures from the UN agency show that 2016 made history with a record global temperature high.

While 2017 is unlikely to match those records, climate change will still see unusually warm temperatures worldwide.

Petteri Taalas, Secretary-General of the WMO, spoke to Lucy Dean about the figures and what they mean for the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
