Many Burundians live in fear because of “widespread repression and increasing intimidation by the ruling party’s youth militia, the Imbonerakure”, the Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on Conflict Prevention told the Security Council on Thursday.

Members of the opposition political parties as well as perceived opponents, such as human rights defenders, continue to be victims to arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances, torture and large-scale arbitrary arrests, Jamal Benomar noted.

Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation in the African country continues to deteriorate and three million people are now in need of aid.
