Small-scale fisheries are key to “blue growth” of seas and oceans

15 February 2017

Small-scale fisheries account for 90 per cent of all jobs in the industry worldwide and their so-called “blue growth” is essential to make fishing more sustainable.

That’s the view of Nicole Franz, a Fishery Planning Analyst with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), who is taking part in a preparatory meeting at UN Headquarters for an upcoming major conference on oceans.

The Ocean Conference in June, will work towards making Sustainable Development Goal 14 on conserving life below water, and protecting marine resources, a reality, by the target date of 2030.

Matthew Wells asked Ms Franz to explain how conditions were changing in the seas and oceans from the perspective of small-scale fisheries.
