Ensuring that displaced people in Wau, South Sudan, can return to their homes is a shared goal of both the Government and the United Nations, the head of the UN mission in the country, UNMISS, said on Wednesday.

David Shearer was speaking following his first visit to the north-western town where nearly 30,000 people are sheltering in a UN protection site following fighting last year between the army and youth associated with the opposition.

While in Wau, Mr Shearer met with the state governor and the top army commander there, in addition to speaking to civilians.

Stalin Gebreselassie asked him about the visit.
