The protection of the rainforests needs to be one of the top priorities for the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) in the year ahead, according to its executive director.

Erik Solheim said trees were a critical part of the battle against climate change since around 20% of global carbon emissions are being generated through the destruction of rainforests.

Mr Solheim initiated the global coalition to conserve and promote sustainable use of the world's rainforests, known as the UN Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (UN REDD).

He spoke to Rosemary Musumba about what can be done; and started by telling her about his plans to get people and the private sector more engaged on UNEP’s agenda.
