There has been a “dramatic” increase in human rights violations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in the past year, according to a new UN probe.

The United Nations Joint Human Rights Office (UNJHRO) documented over 5,000 violations committed across the country.

Close to 64 per cent of the abuses recorded are associated with the electoral process.

Armed groups operating in the volatile eastern part of DRC are responsible for more than 700 deaths.

Jocelyne Sambira asked the UNJHRO Director and Representative of the UN human rights office in the DRC, Jose Maria Aranaz, to outline the key findings of the report.
