With agriculture currently accounting for 70 per cent of global water usage, decision makers in the industry are being urged to strengthen efforts to tackle a looming water crisis.

The warning comes from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) which says a rise in global population together with an increase in food demand means water scarcity will become more widespread.

The appeal has been made as ministers and experts meet in the German capital Berlin for the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture, which opened on Thursday.

Sandra Ferrari has been speaking to the Deputy Director of FAO's Land and Water Division, Olcay Ünver.
