Years of war and destruction “won’t prevent Aleppo from rising” once again, according to the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Syria, speaking from the rubble of the eastern part of the ancient city.

Ali Al-Za’atari said that it “pains the heart” to witness the destruction first hand, but Aleppo’s citizens have a resilience and “love for life” that would fully resurface.

He said that after nearly six years of civil war, millions remain trapped in parts of Syria, including the city of Deir ez-Zor, which has now become, in his words, “double besieged” by ISIL terrorists, as the UN’s been forced to suspend air drops.

Reem Abaza asked Mr Al-Za’atari to describe what he had seen in Aleppo, which was fully recaptured by Syrian government forces in December.
