In July 1969, American astronaut Neil Armstrong landed on the moon, famously proclaiming: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

Women have also contributed to space exploration starting with Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, who made history seven years earlier when she became the first woman to orbit the Earth.
