In South Sudan, the risk of genocide is as real as it was in Rwanda, and the international community should to take action urgently to prevent it.

That was the message from top rights experts at the UN Human Rights Council, which held a special session on the plight of the world’s youngest country in Geneva on Wednesday.

Armed conflict has been a near-constant feature of life in South Sudan for years; a new spike in July this year was accompanied by countless reports of rape as a weapon of war, recruitment of child soldiers, torture, extrajudicial killings and mass displacement.
