Five million suffer from hunger in drought-hit Somalia

More than five million people in Somalia do not have enough to eat and over a million require life-saving aid, the head of the UN food agency in the country has said.

The World Food Programme (WFP) and its partners are stepping up efforts to help communities cope with a severe drought exacerbated by El Niño weather conditions.

The ability of communities who have lived through four successive poor rainy seasons has been “stretched to the limit”.

Laurent Bukere has been speaking to Jocelyne Sambira about his concerns regarding the deteriorating food insecurity and what his office is doing to avoid a full blown crisis.
