Humanitarians are taking a closer look at “neglected and protracted” refugee situations as well as new refugee flows under a global compact aimed at addressing challenges faced by people on the move, a senior UN official has said.

Countries adopted the “New York Declaration” in September to protect and save the lives of refugees and migrants.

They have also agreed on a more just sharing of the burden and responsibility for hosting and supporting the more than 65 million people worldwide, who have been displaced from their homes by conflict or persecution.

Refugees and migrants are dying at sea each year by the thousand, and people fleeing war on land are being blocked by closed borders.

Jocelyne Sambira asked Karen AbuZayd, the outgoing Special Adviser on Addressing Large Movements of Refugees and Migrants, if the UN Summit that rallied world leaders around this issue had served its purpose.
