After a day of violent protest in the Central African Republic which left four dead on Monday, the UN Mission in the country, MINUSCA, says it will “stand firm” in carrying out its mandate.

That’s according to MINUSCA spokesperson, Vladimir Monteiro, speaking from the capital, Bangui.

Four demonstrators were killed and 14 others were injured, including five UN peacekeepers, after barricades were erected outside MINUSCA headquarters.

According to news reports, a coalition of civil society protesters called on residents to stay at home as a protest against MINUSCA, which they accuse of not protecting civilians or tackling armed groups in Bangui.

Matthew Wells asked Mr Monteiro how Monday’s protest had begun.
