Using the arts to promote human rights and making change happen are the ambitious goals of one artist whose work has been unveiled in Geneva.

Created by Spanish sculptor Cristóbal Gabarrón, “Enlightened Universe” is a monumental steel sphere that’s surrounded by a spiral of 70 larger-than-life figurines.

The piece has been erected by the lake front in the Swiss city to celebrate the work of the United Nations on UN Day, held on 24 October.

The artist explained to Daniel Johnson how he hoped that onlookers would join hands with the figurines in a display of solidarity with the UN’s values.
