Horrific violence in Syria’s Aleppo was the focus of an extraordinary session of the UN Human Rights Council on Friday, which ended with a call for a special inquiry into dramatic recent events in the city.

Such so-called “special sessions” are rare, and indeed, this one was the only one to happen so far in 2016, in addition to the council’s three regular meetings held per year.

In an appeal to Member States in Geneva, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein described the conflict as the “defining human rights crisis of our era”.
